ATC NSW concludes with the sound of WRC competitors on the Super Special Stage

Round 2 of the Australian Tarmac Challenge has concluded in Murwillumbah with competitors sampling Rally Australia’s and the WRC Super Special Stage. Later that evening the WRC boys gave it a run, providing plenty of action for competitors as they watched in style from the top floor of the Imperial Hotel above the start line.

The event was a great success with around 60 cars and 90 drivers sampling race tracks, hill climbs and street circuits from Sydney’s Eastern Creek up the North Coast.

Channel Nine’s Karl Stefanovic and Cameron Williams competed in a Nissan 350z Roadster, loving the tight street circuits and the carnival atmosphere along the way.

Dates and information released for 2009 Series - Newsletter 1, 2009

We would like to officially announce the 2009 series - The Australian Tarmac Challenge!

Formerly the Dutton Rally, the Australian Tarmac Challenge (ATC) is the old Dutton you know – but we have had the old girl on the treadmill, down to the plastic surgeon and onto the weight training.

New ownership, new location.

The Australian Tarmac Challenge is located in the Fast Track Australia corporate headquarters at 119 Salmon St Port Melbourne, with our new team as follows:

Anthony Moss – Series Director

Rennie De Maria – Managing Director

Mat Ishac – Series Operations Manager

Mark O’Connor – Technical advisor

Kurt Stiles – Motorsport advisor

Our team will still be assisted by James Taylor (Clerk of Course, Race Solutions), Bruce Foote (Scoring- MDB Consulting) and our many volunteers and officials who make Australian Motorsport possible.

What makes the Australian Tarmac Challenge different:

Firstly, the old system of Handicap and Outright Championships will go – and in comes a completely new system – Street Production, Club and Motorsport Championships. All three will have equal weighting and equal significance. Don’t want to bring the GT3 Porsche or the EVO IX MR? Bring the M3, the HSV Clubby, or even the Mazda 3 MPS instead – the Championships are designed to encourage anyone to enter and compete on-par with similar vehicles.

Secondly, the events have changed. Some dramatically, some only slightly. Our credo is to provide you with the most motorsport activity we can fit into 3 days at great venues, and this is what we will do. If its not a motorsport venue, we will make it one – and this will become evident as we progress through the 2009 Series.

The first event will be in Victoria- and the venues include Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit, the now infamous Haunted Hillclimb in Morwell and the Moe DECA centre, and the unbelievable and challenging Holden test facility, at Lang Lang.

Second will be the NSW event. Gone are Wakefield Park and Canberra, the NSW event has completely changed for 2009. The event will begin in Sydney, make its way to Eastern Creek International Raceway for a day of competition, and then up the coast to Newcastle, Coffs Harbour, Grafton and finally the Tweed Coast where it will become and official part of the WRC event. WRC? Yes, the Dutton Tarmac Challenge competitors for NSW will officially compete on the WRC Super Special Stage – the same ones the WRC cars will use – of course all on Tarmac Roads. Combine some of Australia’s best hillclimbs, scenery and other bits of secret tarmac we have found along the way, and this makes the DTC NSW an event not to be missed in 2009!

Lastly, we will head to Western Australia for event 3, for more fun at Collie, Perth Motorplex, AHG and Barbagallo Raceway. Don’t think Perth will be tame though, we are aiming for a complete shakeup of Collie, Motorplex and AHG – think head to head, mate against mate timed challenges and you will start to get the idea.

Confirmed 2009 Dates are:

Event 1: Victoria  29-31 May

Event 2: New South Wales  3-6 September

Event 3: Western Australia  16-18 October

Now we know that some of you will be thinking that the 2009 Motorsport budget is not looking too good at the moment, and you might think that all this sounds great, but will probably cost more right? Well, WRONG! The 2009 Series will be even more affordable than ever with different events different costs, and our low-fat Tarmac Challenge Diet designed to make it more affordable for you without taking out any motorsport or any fun stuff. Some of the dinners have gone, but we have replaced these with 10pm presentations at local pubs each night. The media stuff will stay and we are looking at more ways to promote your sponsors online and with video footage, with more options for you to choose in each package.

So hang up the race boots and park the full-blown racing car. Steal the daily driver from the wife and come and have some fun with us!

We will be releasing pricing, packages and full schedules in the next week or so. Of course if you want to make a deposit to secure your entry now, don’t hesitate! We envisage 2009 will be a huge year – bring on the 2009 Australian Tarmac Challenge!

See you on the black stuff.

Cheers,

Anthony Moss
